Racial Awareness: That’s What I Want for My Birthday
Humor me on my birthday and watch my video.
We live in a society that has biases towards people of other races. This isn’t unexpected or surprising. We see people biased against people who root for an opposing football or baseball team. I’m a red wine drinker and I’m biased against white wine drinkers. We are all wired to think of “us” versus “them.”
Why wouldn’t we be biased against people who aren’t like us?
As a marketer, I use this to my advantage and the advantage of my customers. Going back several centuries, people never traveled but a few miles from where they were born. There were people who were familiar to them. Then there were strangers. People they had never met before. That immediately meant danger.
Why do we marketers recommend people record and publish lots of videos?.
After people see you many times on video, they feel they know you which leads them liking you. You are no longer a stranger. Then it follows that people do business with people they know and like so this is a good selling strategy.
My request and even challenge is to take a step with me in a new direction. It’s a direction that we weren’t thinking about a few weeks back. We were all to busy with the pandemic.
Now, in light of the protests and all that’s happening following the George Floyd killing, take a step with me in raising your own awareness.
What can each of us individually do to take us all in a better direction?
