We dodged a major catastrophe here in Miami with Hurricane Dorian, as if by divine intervention, passing us by. We now have a cloudy, breezy weather with kids outside riding their bikes. (The local schools closed today just in case.)
My prayer go to our Bahamian neighbors. They're still getting pounded and will need a lot of support to recover.
If Dorian had hit us, we here in Miami prepared. We have impact windows. We filled out our gas tanks since supplies typically get interrupted after a big storm. We stocked up on water and non-perishable food. If the lights go out, stuff in the fridge won't do.
WHAT ABOUT YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS?
Are you prepared? Not for a hurricane, but for the eventual business disaster that could happen to anyone.
I find that a lot of service providers, and this can include coaches, consultants, lawyers and accountants, are not prepared. In this group I also includes dentists, surgeons and other health practitioners with businesses that are 100% dependent on them showing up for revenue.
If the business owner or the doctor gets sick or cannot work, no income. If you take a vacation, no income. It's a big exposure.
For these types of business owners, I like to offer a disaster proofing advice. Can you identify opportunities to offer "something" that doesn't rely on you showing up?
I've worked with physicians that have developed online weight loss and health improvement programs. Done right, these are big money makers and they leverage off the doctor's credibility. These can be online groups you coach or do-it-yourself programs. They bring in the income without the owner having to be there.
I've worked with realtors, good ones, that packaged up what made them successful and now work with realtors offering them programs they can use to succeed like they did. They put their marketing and operational systems into online courses, some with coaching components, that get other realtors results like they got. And these programs don't take much of their time to deliver or are run by others on their team.
This kind or preparation sure beats the panic that could set in if the unexpected happens and you can't work. It also eliminates the anxiety and worry that sets in when you want to enjoy time with your family while on vacation versus having to work about all the money you aren't making.
